Through my personal experience as a concerned citizen, I've witnessed the impact of divided attention among politicians occupying dual roles, both as parliament members and as regular employees in a diverse range of professional sectors. This practice has led to a noticeable disregard for local and national issues that are crucial to our socio-economic development. The crucial role of parliament requires focus and accountability, and we believe that these virtues are compromised when a member is allowed to hold another job.
According to a study by the UK Parliament, nearly 30% of Members of Parliament have declared earnings from outside their parliamentary work (source: UK Parliament, 2017). This statistic points to a troubling trend of divided attention and potential conflicts of interest.
There is a pressing need to prohibit politicians from holding any other job while serving as Members of Parliament. Maintaining such dual roles could negatively impact their responsibilities towards serving the public, potentially leading to the neglect of their primary duty, which is to address and fix local and national issues.
We are proposing the implementation of a 'Sole Occupation Rule' for MPs, ensuring that they are fully dedicated to their parliamentary duties, and thereby potentially increasing their efficacy and accountability.
