The Spike in Illegal Migrants: Is the UK Really a Soft Touch?

In recent years, the UK has seen a significant increase in the number of illegal migrants crossing the English Channel. This surge has sparked a heated debate about whether the UK is perceived as a "soft touch" for migrants. Let's delve into the factors contributing to this phenomenon and examine the arguments on both sides.

The Surge in Illegal Crossings

According to data from Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, there was a 9% rise in illegal crossings via the English Channel in 2024, with 67,752 detected crossings. This increase stands in stark contrast to the overall 38% drop in irregular crossings into Europe, highlighting the unique challenges faced by the UK.

Perception of the UK as a Soft Touch

Migration experts argue that the UK's border controls are perceived as weaker compared to other European nations. Frank Furedi, executive director of the MCC Brussels think tank, stated that the UK has become a "soft touch" due to its feeble border controls. This perception is further fuelled by the welcoming reception and the prospect of a permanent stay, making the UK an attractive destination for migrants.

Government Response

In response to the surge in illegal crossings, the UK government has ramped up its efforts to remove illegal migrants. Since the Labour government took office, there has been a significant increase in the number of migrants removed from the UK, with 16,400 people removed in the past year. The government has also introduced new sanctions to combat irregular migration and disrupt smuggling networks.

Conclusion

The debate over whether the UK is a soft touch for illegal migrants is complex and multifaceted.  As the government continues to implement measures to address illegal migration, it remains to be seen how these efforts will impact the overall situation and so far i have little faith in anything changing. Labour have "a dizzying number of about-faces" in other words every time he opens his mouth another lie is told.
